With 2016 in the books, we’re officially done with our first year of photography as professional photographers! It has been an interesting and exciting year, to say the least, and we’re looking forward to many more. We’ll share some of our experiences in this first blog post and tell you a little about ourselves.
Let’s start with introducing the team:
Yasar Awan has a B.S. in Biology and an M.B.A. from Penn State University. Yasar’s passion for photography started off while he was an undergrad at Penn State. With his first DSLR camera given to him as a gift by his older brother, Yasar taught himself the basics of photography using his Nikon D3200. He started off photographing landscapes and nature and eventually started photographing people when he became the social media graduate assistant while doing his MBA. Since that time, Yasar travelled to many cities and countries around the world and continued to focus on landscape and nature. What made Yasar get into photographing portraits of people and wedding photography? We’ll get into that in a bit.
Yasar is joined by his wife Heera Awan who has a B.S. in Biotechnology from Penn State University. Did you make the connection? Yasar and Heera met in college, eventually fell in love and got married! After getting married, Heera started her own business as a makeup artist (Awan That Makeup). While Heera worked on growing her portfolio, she had Yasar take photos for her. This is what ultimately got Yasar to get into portrait photography and eventually into wedding photography. Yasar passed his photography knowledge on to Heera and the two of them started Once Awan A Time Photography (inspired by their wedding hashtag).

So now that you know a little bit about us, we’ll tell you about our first year as professional photographers. We’ve learned A LOT. We’ve taken photography workshops, ‘googled’ a lot of techniques, researched why some of our photos would come out darker than others in the same lighting, learned more about manual photography from shutter speed and aperture to ISO and flash photography. Dr. Seuss once said “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go”; this has been the case with us – the more we learned the more confident we got and the more challenging assignments we took on.
Over the last year we’ve photographed weddings, portraits, head shots, quinceañeras, family photos, birthdays, newborns, and even cars. While the types of photography varied, the understanding of how different lighting would affect our photos helped us be successful at what we do. Understanding lighting is one of the key principles of being a successful photographer. Shooting in low-light is one of the most challenging, but if you have the right equipment and understand the principles of how to use your equipment, you’re in pretty good shape.
So why do we do what we do? We love it! We enjoy meeting with clients and providing them with memories that will last a life time (assuming you’re being a smart consumer and printing these memories to albums, prints, or canvases at the least). We also love working with each other. Being a husband and wife team makes it fun, and since we understand each other and communicate really well it makes it a bit less stressful! We get to meet with our clients, photograph our clients, and edit the photos together. That just means we get to spend more time together doing what we love, and that drives us to keep doing what we do without ever getting bored!
Now enough with the talking, let’s show you our year in photos!
